MY IDENTITY

One of the greatest question everyone ought to answer in life is the question of identity; the question of who you are. We see identity as the distinguishing character or personality of an individual, the unique peculiarities of a person. Identity can also be seen as a close resemblance to someone or something else. When I think of identity, I can’t help but think of the Genesis of it all.
“ Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over [a]all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (NKJV)” .
Genesis 1:26-27
This means my identity is the exact likeness of God both in nature and quality; this also means that I am a reflection of the image and essence of God. The book of Genesis answers the question of WHO I AM, WHERE I COME FROM, THE RIGHTS AND PRIVILEDGES I CARRY AS A MEMBER OF THE KINGDOM I REPRESENT. Understanding this helps me recognize discrepancies in my life and informs my decisions. It is important for me to answer the question of who I am and where I come from because many things in life will question my knowledge and when push comes to shove, I will be faced with responsibility of making the greatest decision of my life that will make or mar me. WHEN EVER MY KNOWLEDGE IS QUESTIONED, MY IDENTITY IS QUESTIONED. This was the major strategy of the devil in Genesis 3:1b
“And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” (NKJV).
Eve’s response brought her to a place of subordination to the devil. Similarly, our Lord Jesus Christ confronted by the devil, affirmed His identity based on God’s unchanging truth. The devil tried same with Him using the word “if you are the son of God”, what a conditional statement. Jesus knew that statement was supposed to be definite, and his response proved it; “Man shall not live by bread alone…. Jesus was letting the devil know that whatever strategy he was bringing, God had already set in motion His word to help us fight back so Christ quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 to counter the devil.
Some of us question the knowledge of who we are in Christ, we question our being a child of God. some of us in a world where we are still trying to discover ourselves and purpose have the proclivity of questioning what/ who we are made to become.
The African- American community is sometimes described as people without root. The Jamaican political activist Marcus Garvey once said that “A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”. Many of the African Americans are now carrying out the ancestral DNA test to know where their ancestral fathers come from. The Bishop T.D. Jakes was one of those and he realized that a large percentage of his root is Nigeria, the Igbo tribe precisely. The typical Igbo men are business conscious. The bishop had this innate trait but did not know where it came from until he made his research and findings. There is a character and a personality you carry because of your roots, identity and DNA. DNA is important because it contains the instructions needed for an organism or a person to develop, survive and reproduce in life; it contains the instructions necessary for life. You carry the DNA of God and the instructions you need to survive, reproduce and live is in His word.
The question today is: WHAT OR WHO DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH?
Some of us identify with money, some with family, others with friends, social media, etc. If the answer to the question is Christ and you believe your identity is in Christ, has that changed who you really are, and have you really conformed to the image of who God is?
Next time we will be looking at seven truths about our identity, God bless you and plant His word in your heart in Jesus’ name.
PRAYER: Heavenly father, I come to you today and I pray you help me to find and know that my identity is in you in Jesus’ name.

When God’s Word becomes your language, you begin to speak like Christ. It is through the knowledge of the Word that your words are transformed into the language of the Spirit.
“A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”
It is of great importance to understand and know your origin, To recognize where you come from. Just like a tree without roots lacks stability can be easily influenced by anything … when there is knowledge it breeds stability.
