MODESTY IN DRESSING

MODESTY IN DRESSING

“You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.” [songs of Solomon 4:17]

The one who is born again has a deep love for righteousness. She earnestly seeks to align her actions with God’s will, striving to honor and obey His Word. This longing is not simply a matter of human effort; rather, it is a clear sign of the transformative work that has occurred within her heart. Modesty is a state of the mind that is being reflected through lifestyle. A reflection of inner attitudes and values. It begins with the self-confidence that comes from knowing and understanding one’s identity.

To me, modesty represents a form of nobility. Understanding one’s identity in Christ is crucial for this journey toward modesty. You are royalty! Your body should be carried with dignity and respect befitting a sacred vessel. We often observe that royalty, whether in person, on screens, or in literature, conveys an aura of self-assurance through their modest yet elegant appearance. This demonstrates that true confidence comes from within. Choosing clothing and grooming habits that align with a modest mindset shows intentionality. It reflects a deliberate decision to prioritize character and values over appearance and most importantly, pleasing God.

2 Corinthians 5:9 (NIV) “So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.”

Persons with a different school of thought use the verse 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV) that talks about God’s interest in the heart and not appearance, to argue against an emphasis on modesty. However, after meditating on this verse, I only see the importance of modesty being reiterated, having established it as a reflection of what really is in our heart. It highlights that our external expressions should authentically reflect the true condition of our heart.

Consider this analogy: when shopping for fruit would you pick up a fruit that is bruised or has dark spots and say, “it’s just the inside of it that matters”? Except you love some diarrhea, you definitely would not go for it. Similarly, modesty ensures that our outward appearance is in harmony with our inner values and integrity. Remember, “You are the light of the world!” Your light should shine brightly with grace. In conclusion, modesty is also a form of worship to God.

Romans 12:1 (NIV) “…offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship’

It becomes easier to please Abba when we let go of self-centeredness and focus solely on making Him smile. I have no iota of doubt that the lord prides himself on queens that dress with the intention to please Him and not one to make the other fall. We do not have to show off certain parts of our body to be classed as beautiful.I want to have an elegant walk into a room filled with royalties knowing fully well that I am glorifying God with my body.

Remember: You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you. [songs of Solomon 4:17]

N.B: Modesty extends beyond dressing; however, this article focuses on the specific context of dressing.
