YOU HAVE ABSOLUTE EVIDENCE(PART 1)

TEXT: JOSHUA 1:4, 4:1-7

There are moments in life when we are often faced with uncertainties, doubts, and fears. Most of the time, they cloud our vision and question our faith. We find ourselves struggling to believe God’s promises, let alone their coming to pass; we also question the reliability of His word. Still, in a time like this, it is important to remember that you indeed have absolute evidence. This verity is demonstrated in Joshua 1:4 and brings to our consciousness that the promises of God are clear, unwavering, and undeniable.

Joshua 1:4 says “your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates, all the Hittite country, to the Mediterranean Sea in the west’’ (NIV).

God was giving Joshua a clear but specific promise about their territory, which was not just vast but emblematic of God fulfilling His covenant with the Israelites. These promises were not to give the Israelites a fleeting hope but were grounded in absolute evidence. From the Exodus out of Egypt to the provision in the wilderness using Moses, God had already shown His sovereignty and faithfulness. The land promised to Joshua and the Israelites by God was not new but a continuation of God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The point to note is that the promises of God come with pieces of evidence that cannot deny His faithfulness. The Israelites had already witnessed the Ten Plagues, the Red Sea Parting, manna falling from heaven, and the walls of Jericho crumbling. These events are a miracle and cannot be termed a coincidence. They are powerful testaments of God’s presence, power, and authority even in our lives. God was not calling Joshua to trust in uncertainties but was asking him to walk in the consciousness of the already existing evidence provided by Him.

God’s promise to Joshua was built on what God had done and was not dependent on future success or uncertainties. The same goes for our lives; our absolute evidence is in the promises of God which He has provided, embedded in His word, through His word, and our life experiences. In this moment of my life, as I write this; having some uncertainties, one thing I am certain about when I look at the trajectory of my life is that God has never failed and He won’t start now. Hebrews 10:23b reminds us that ‘He who promised is faithful’.

Take some time and think about those moments of healing, provision, comfort, protection, direction, guidance, solace, and the gift of quality men, the times you knew undeniably that the hand of God was indeed at work, in the doors He opened. These are absolute evidence in our own lives. These are the very foundation of our trusting Him in the future. The same God who led the Israelites and brought them into the promised land is the same God leading us today.

Just as Joshua was called to step out in faith and claim the land promised to the Israelites, we too have been called to walk assertively into His promises made available for us. For Joshua, his certainty of God’s word and the historical evidence of God’s acts propelled him to forge ahead and not give up. But for us, our road map is the Bible which serves as evidence that God will fulfill every word He has spoken.

However, the question is not in having evidence but our willingness to advance beyond our familiar, trusting in what we cannot see yet. The Israelites, despite their murmurings and distress, had to leave their comfort zone for them to possess the land; talk about bold steps indeed. Similarly, we are often called to take our bold steps into the unfamiliar while trusting that His faithfulness is enough to give us hope and a future.

Lastly, someone needs to hear this again: you have absolute and tangible evidence and if you ever get to a place of doubt, look beyond yourself and look at a God that takes care of the Lilies, He’ll do much more for you created in His image and likeness. Our reflective question is important to answer.

  • When faced with doubts or fear, how can you remind yourself of the absolute evidence of God’s faithfulness?
  • Do you find it easy to trust God?
  • What tangible actions or steps of faith have you taken recently while trusting in God’s faithfulness?
  • How do you strengthen your faith in moments of doubt?

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father I ask that every eye that sees this come to the consciousness of the evidence you have surrounded them with and may your love overwhelm their hearts in Jesus’ Name. Amen
