A WOMAN OF HER WORD
The title of this article is coined from a very popular phrase, “a man of my word”. When I pondered on this phrase, I realized that the most I have heard it used was when one’s integrity is being questioned concerning what they said or say they would do. Most of the times, it is said defensively, they just blurt out: “I’m a man of my word!”. It got me thinking, why does this mostly apply to the promises we give to others and not to the promises we give to ourselves?
Can you cast your mind back to all the promises you made to yourself: I will read that book, exercise my body, be consistent in my bible study and prayer life, be more intentional about the places I go to, the words I speak, the content I consume, the time I will spend on social media, the things that I eat… the list goes on but I am sure that you get the picture I am trying to paint. How many of these promises that you made to yourself have you broken with not so much concern about your integrity? Does it weigh so little because you are the only person involved?
Take a pause and think about this. Where do you think all the self-doubt, lack of will to do things that usually excites you come from? They are a result of the number of times you have constantly let yourself down and you didn’t even give it so much thought. You just kept letting yourself down until you became indifferent to the things that are supposed to build you and prepare you for what life and destiny has in store for you. You became numb to the gift of the life that you received and no longer cared how your life turns out.
Psalms 15:1&4c – “Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? 4 Those who …. keep their promises even when it hurts.” (NLT)
When I read the bible text above, I read it with myself in mind. How does this scripture apply to me and the promises that I constantly make to myself. Why do I have little or no regard for my own growth and progress? Is it because I feel no one is there to hold me accountable? I am not here to berate you or myself, but to get you to consider living a life where you are constantly having introspective thoughts on how things apply to you first before others.
John 16:13-14 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” (NKJV)
The Holy spirit that dwells on your inside, holds you accountable to the promises that you make to yourself. He does not just hold you accountable but has the ability and capacity to empower you to keep them if you are willing to let Him help you. You see, the personal disciplines and trainings that you allow God to take you through successfully are what will help you influence your world. God is interested in your life and the words that you give to yourself, not just the ones that you give others.
This is a challenge to go back and check on how much you value yourself and your destiny. When you check and what you discover is an undervalue or overvalue of yourself, don’t be too hard on yourself and wallow in self-pity and condemnation. You have a God who is very interested in conforming you to His will and has made all the provisions for your growth. I heard from a preacher that “in the place of destiny manifestation, selfishness is allowed.” You must learn how to prioritize your growth first, because you cannot give what you don’t have.
So, when next you make those promises to yourself, outline them and go to God in prayer, because whenever you deploy those words that are for your profit, there are forces unleashed to prevent you from accomplishing them. Take it to God in prayer and be a woman of your word.
