Cether-The Secret place
Psalms 91:1 “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty..” (NKJV)
You know that feeling when the first raindrop lands on your arm, and you think, maybe it won’t pour? And unexpectedly the sky opens up, and you’re instantly drenched. Your clothes cling to you, your shoes squelch with every step, and all you want is to find shelter—somewhere safe, warm, and dry. You just want to escape the downpour, shake off the cold and feel at peace again. That deep longing for refuge? It’s a lot like our need for a dwelling place—a place of safety and rest. In Hebrew, there’s a word for this: Cether, meaning a secret place, a hiding place, a shelter or covering.
Cether represents our home in God, a place of intimacy, communion, and fellowship with Him. It is our hiding place away from the distractions and cares of the world. It is a place where we can find refuge in times of trouble, strength in times of weakness, and solace in times of distress.
It is not a physical location but rather a meeting point between God and man where He reveals Himself to those who diligently seek Him, and where you cultivate a real, two-way relationship with Him. It is not a place of secrecy between God and man, but rather a place where we can lay ourselves bare before Him, sharing our struggles, anxieties, pains, and weaknesses.
It is a place of revelation where He speaks, instructs, and guides us. As we spend time in the secret place, we become more attuned to God’s voice, learning His will for our lives. Through this, we are able to navigate our daily lives with confidence.
The beautiful thing about this journey is that as we trust Him, we let go of ourselves and experience true intimacy with Christ. The secret place can be likened to a blindfold—but one that works in two ways. It closes our eyes to fear and opens our eyes to trusting God. Consider Daniel. He remained steadfast in his Cether, and even when he was thrown into the lions’ den, he did not waver. We all know how that story ended—he came out triumphant, with renewed faith and hope. That is what Cether does; it strengthens our trust in God and deepens our knowledge of Him, our Abba.
His presence is more than a safety net, it is a place of restoration. Restoration is not the mending of what was but rather what is meant to be. The silent steadying of your hands and heart that is trembling from the weight of sorrows and traumas is what the secret place offers.
The hands that formed the stars above have not forgotten you in the dust.
What you have lost was never wasted, for even broken vessels pour out oil.
For the waves obey the voice of peace, and in the depth of quiet,
He weaves in us hope
So you stand, not despite the storm, but because of it
And beneath his shadow, the broken breathes again
So don’t just stand out in the pouring rain, don’t wallow in that distress or run from that problem. Find shelter, companionship, solace and solution in the secret place. Bring your worries and cares with you, cast them on our Lord Jesus.
Wisdom, trust and revelation of God are cultivated in Cether. In a world full of storms, your secret place is your weapon. God offers us a safe refuge, a place where we can rest, heal, and be renewed. No matter how overwhelming life gets, His dwelling place is always open to us.
